How to guarantee a smooth first night in your new home
Your first night in your new home can be an emotional rollercoaster.
You probably feel anxious, nervous, scared, or overwhelmed.
And then there’s the stress and mental fatigue of saying goodbye to your previous hometown, and a sense of excitement about what lies ahead.
That’s why it’s important to be prepared for your first night at your new address – whether that’s in Perth from Melbourne, going from Sydney to Brisbane, or Tasmania via the Gold Coast.
A first night checklist is a great way to ensure you settle in as quickly and smoothly as possible.
And after a decade moving Aussies across our beautiful country, here’s what we’ve learned.
Essentials
The first thing is to unpack your ‘essentials’ box. This box should be kept with you at all times during the move and should contain any essentials you will need on the first night in your house.
This could be medications, toiletries, bottled water, clothing, children’s and pet’s neccessities, tools for opening boxes and setting up your new place.
Bedroom and bathroom
Once you’ve unpacked your moving survival kit, it’s time to set up your bed.
After a long day of moving you are going to need a good rest. Ensure you have a mattress to sleep on, even if all of your bedding hasn’t arrived. Next, set up any necessary toiletries, towels, and anything you need to have a nice warm shower and brush your teeth.
Be prepared
Be prepared for everything that can go wrong to go wrong! You can’t control everything, but you can be prepared.
Our advice is to enjoy the experience, whatever it might be.
Children and pets are particularly sensitive when comes to a change in environment and will need constant care and reassurance during the first night in your new home.

It is also important to take care of yourself during the first night in your new home as you may begin to experience relocation anxiety and depression.
