Tips on how to move fine artwork

It’s not every day that you move house especially interstate and it can be tricky knowing how to pack your artwork and artefact.

Here are five easy tips for transporting your fragile frames and prized possessions with the consideration they deserve.

Pay attention to specific packing and spacing requirements to ensure your treasured pieces arrive in one piece.

Are the protective materials lining the crates and containers carrying your artwork and antiques properly preserving your precious goods from damage?

Ask you removalist about the density of your canvas or ceramic and what shock absorption is required to prevent vibration to avoid splits and cracks.

Always handle art with care.

Avoid putting heavy boxes or the like on top of your pictures and remember the best place for them is hung up on the wall instead of the floor. Preferably where it is dry and cool.

Wrap artwork regardless of its originality or sentimentality, in unprinted newsprint or plain brown paper – or risk ink transferring onto the paint or print.

Even wrapping it in a garbage bag will help keep it from being marked.

Don’t cut corners.

Apply heavy-duty corner protectors (insert link: www.alliedpac.com.au/Corner-Protectors) to artwork and at least two layers of bubble wrap or foam front and back. Or cut a piece of cardboard to fit the frame’s glass to strengthen it before securing the entire piece into large, heavy-duty picture boxes.

Fit padding snugly in and around the item.

The art of moving all manner, shape, and size of sculptures, antiques and breakables take time and expertise. Fit padding snugly in and around the item.  Use generous layers of bubble wrap, specialist storage companies, more foam and packing peanuts once in the box to prevent unwanted movement.
